It investigates the impact of separating students along socioeconomic lines on student attitudes, dispositions and outlooks considered important for social cohesion as well as on achievement, opening the discussion about the social costs of school segregation. The separation of students based on their social background is a common feature of schooling in many modern systems. This is not only due to the influence of residential segregation but also to the effects of policies promoting educational privatisation, parental choice and student academic selection. By recognising the importance of schooling for citizenship and social integration, the chapters in this book explore how the separation of students throughout their school lives can contribute to the division of citizens beyond school, and how social segregation in school systems affect social cohesion more broadly. By exploring the case of Santiago, Chile, the study is a timely contribution to the understanding of the roots of social division and the role that schools play in creating cohesive societies. The originality of the approach and the evidence presented draw on implications that should be of interest to a wider audience concerned with contemporary discussions on solidarity and its erosion by educational segregation in urban environments. 001436009 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed April 27, 2021). 001436009 650_0 $$aSegregation in education$$zChile$$zSantiago. 001436009 650_0 $$aEducation, Urban$$zChile$$zSantiago. 001436009 650_0 $$aEducational sociology$$zChile$$zSantiago. 001436009 650_0 $$aStudents$$zChile$$zSantiago$$xSocial conditions. 001436009 650_6 $$aSégrégation en éducation$$zChili$$zSantiago. 001436009 650_6 $$aEnseignement en milieu urbain$$zChili$$zSantiago. 001436009 650_6 $$aSociologie de l'éducation$$zChili$$zSantiago. 001436009 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001436009 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aMolina, Andres.$$tSchool segregation and social cohesion in Santiago.$$dCham : Springer, [2021]$$z3030705331$$z9783030705336$$w(OCoLC)1235417705 001436009 830_0 $$aInternational study of city youth education ;$$vvolume 3.$$x2524-8537 001436009 852__ $$bebk 001436009 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-70534-3$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001436009 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1436009$$pGLOBAL_SET 001436009 980__ $$aBIB 001436009 980__ $$aEBOOK 001436009 982__ $$aEbook 001436009 983__ $$aOnline 001436009 994__ $$a92$$bISE
