As the original site of production of unbaked clay idols of the Hindu Goddess Durga and other Gods and Goddesses, Kumartuli remains at the centre of such art and heritage. The art and heritage of Kumartuli have been facing challenges in a rapidly globalizing world that demands constant redefinition of art with the invasion of market forces and migration of idol makers. As such, the book includes chapters on the evolution of idols, iconographic transformations, popular culture and how the public is constituted by the production and consumption of the works of art and heritage and finally the continuous shaping and reshaping of urban imaginaries and contestations over public space. It also investigates the caste group of Kumbhakars (Kumars or the idol makers), reflecting on the complex relation between inherited skill and artistry. Further, it explores how the social construction of art as art introduces a tangled web of power asymmetries between art and craft between an artist and an artisan and between appreciation and consumption along with their implications for the articulation of market in particular and social relations in general. Since little has been written on this heritage hub beyond popular pamphlets, documents on town planning and travelogues, the book, written by authors from various fields, opens up cross-disciplinary conversations, situating itself at the interface between art history, sociology of aesthetics, politics and government, social history, cultural studies, social anthropology and archaeology. The book is aimed at a wide readership, including students, scholars, town planners, heritage preservationists, lawmakers and readers interested in heritage in general and Kumartuli in particular. 001436830 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed June 9, 2021). 001436830 60000 $$aDurgā$$c(Hindu deity) 001436830 60000 $$aDurgā$$c(Hindu deity)$$xArt. 001436830 650_0 $$aIdols and images$$zIndia$$zBengal. 001436830 650_0 $$aHindu art objects$$zIndia$$zBengal. 001436830 650_6 $$aIdoles et images$$zBengale (Bangladesh et Inde) 001436830 651_0 $$aBengal (India)$$xCivilization. 001436830 651_6 $$aBengale (Inde)$$xCivilisation. 001436830 655_7 $$aArt.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01423702 001436830 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001436830 7001_ $$aDas, Samir Kumar,$$d1961-$$eeditor. 001436830 7001_ $$aBasak, Bishnupriya,$$eeditor. 001436830 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z981160262X$$z9789811602627$$w(OCoLC)1231957616 001436830 852__ $$bebk 001436830 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-16-0263-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001436830 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1436830$$pGLOBAL_SET 001436830 980__ $$aBIB 001436830 980__ $$aEBOOK 001436830 982__ $$aEbook 001436830 983__ $$aOnline 001436830 994__ $$a92$$bISE
