Children's literature emerged as dizzying numbers of new species flooded into Britain with scientific expeditions, from giraffes and hippopotami to kangaroos, wombats, platypuses or sloths. As the book argues, late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian children's writers took part in the urge for mass education and presented the world and its curious creatures to children, often borrowing from their museum culture and its objects to map out that world. This original exploration illuminates how children's literature dealt with the new ordering of the world, offering a unique viewpoint on the construction of science in the long nineteenth century. Laurence Talairach is Professor of English at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès and associate researcher at the Alexandre Koyré Centre for the History of Science and Technology, France. Her research specialises in the interrelations between nineteenth-century literature, medicine and science. 001436919 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed June 7, 2021). 001436919 650_0 $$aChildren's literature, English$$xHistory and criticism$$y19th century. 001436919 650_0 $$aAnimals in literature. 001436919 650_0 $$aMuseums and children. 001436919 650_6 $$aLittérature de jeunesse anglaise$$xHistoire et critique$$y19e siècle. 001436919 650_6 $$aAnimaux dans la littérature. 001436919 650_6 $$aMusées et enfants. 001436919 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001436919 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001436919 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z303072526X$$z9783030725266$$w(OCoLC)1240493061 001436919 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in animals and literature,$$x2634-6338 001436919 852__ $$bebk 001436919 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-72527-3$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001436919 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1436919$$pGLOBAL_SET 001436919 980__ $$aBIB 001436919 980__ $$aEBOOK 001436919 982__ $$aEbook 001436919 983__ $$aOnline 001436919 994__ $$a92$$bISE
