Classical Stoicism has lately seen a popular resurgence inspiring self-help books and therapeutic treatments for anxiety and depression. As a scholarly source for the Western political tradition, it is even more important. Yet, as A.A. Long once observed: "of all the ancient philosophies, Stoicism has probably had the most diffused--yet least--adequately acknowledged influence on Western thought." This close textual study not only provides the first systematic study of the political content of Stoic thought but also establishes the hitherto under-appreciated influence of classical Stoicism on the political thought of the long eighteenth century and beyond in Europe and particularly Britain. The Stoic ideas upon which we focus include their cosmopolitanism, their contribution to sociability and self-interest debates, their influence on modern feminism and utilitarianism, and their prefiguration of modern conceptions of personal rights 001438289 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001438289 650_0 $$aStoics. 001438289 650_0 $$aPolitical science$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001438289 650_0 $$aPolitical science$$zEurope$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001438289 650_6 $$aStoïcisme. 001438289 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001438289 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001438289 7001_ $$aBlazejak, Eden.,$$eauthor. 001438289 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z981162741X$$z9789811627415$$w(OCoLC)1247673363 001438289 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHILL, LISA.$$tSTOICISM AND THE WESTERN POLITICAL TRADITION.$$d[S.l.] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2021$$z981162741X$$w(OCoLC)1247673363 001438289 852__ $$bebk 001438289 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-16-2742-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001438289 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1438289$$pGLOBAL_SET 001438289 980__ $$aBIB 001438289 980__ $$aEBOOK 001438289 982__ $$aEbook 001438289 983__ $$aOnline 001438289 994__ $$a92$$bISE
