Delving into the little-known history of women who joined income-sharing communities during the 1840s, this book uses four community case studies to examine social activism within communal environments. In a period when women faced legal and social restrictions ranging from coverture to slavery, the emergence of residential communities designed by French utopian writer, Charles Fourier, introduced spaces where female leadership and social organization became possible. Communitarian women helped shape the ideological underpinnings of some of the United States most enduring and successful reform efforts, including the womens rights movement, the abolition movement, and the creation of the Republican Party. Dr. Hart argues that these movements were intertwined, with activists influencing multiple organizations within unexpected settings. Dr. Amy Hart holds a Ph. D. in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has served as a lecturer at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is currently a public historian for California State Parks. 001438778 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001438778 60010 $$aFourier, Charles,$$d1772-1837. 001438778 650_0 $$aWomen social reformers$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001438778 650_0 $$aUtopias$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001438778 650_6 $$aRéformatrices sociales$$zÉtats-Unis$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001438778 650_6 $$aUtopies$$zÉtats-Unis$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001438778 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xSocial conditions$$y19th century. 001438778 651_6 $$aÉtats-Unis$$xConditions sociales$$y19e siècle. 001438778 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001438778 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001438778 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHart, Amy.$$tFourierist communities of reform.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030683559$$w(OCoLC)1259547907 001438778 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in utopianism. 001438778 852__ $$bebk 001438778 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-68356-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001438778 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1438778$$pGLOBAL_SET 001438778 980__ $$aBIB 001438778 980__ $$aEBOOK 001438778 982__ $$aEbook 001438778 983__ $$aOnline 001438778 994__ $$a92$$bISE
