Moving away from a focus on medical education and professional appointments, the book reorients attention to how medical self-fashioning interacted with other axes of identity, including age, gender, race, and the spaces of practice. Drawing on medical journals and fiction, as well as professional advice guides and popular periodicals, this volume considers how images of medical practice and professionalism were formed in the cultural and medical imagination. Alison Moulds uncovers how medical professionals were involved in textual production and consumption as editors, contributors, correspondents, readers, authors, and reviewers. Ultimately, this book opens up new perspectives on the relationship between literature and medicine, revealing how the profession engaged with a range of textual practices to build communities, air grievances, and augment its cultural authority and status in public life. Alison Moulds is a cultural historian and literary scholar. She completed her DPhil at the University of Oxford, UK, as part of the AHRC-funded Constructing Scientific Communities project. Moulds then worked on Diseases of Modern Life (ERC-funded, University of Oxford, UK) and Surgery & Emotion (Wellcome Trust-funded, University of Roehampton, UK). She now has a career in health policy. 001439000 588__ $$aDescription based on CIP data; resource not viewed. 001439000 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001439000 650_0 $$aEnglish literature$$y19th century$$xHistory and criticism. 001439000 650_0 $$aEnglish literature$$y20th century$$xHistory and criticism. 001439000 650_0 $$aLiterature and medicine$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001439000 650_0 $$aLiterature and medicine$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001439000 650_0 $$aMedicine in literature. 001439000 650_0 $$aMedical literature$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001439000 650_0 $$aMedical literature$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001439000 650_6 $$aLittérature anglaise$$y19e siècle$$xHistoire et critique. 001439000 650_6 $$aLittérature anglaise$$y20e siècle$$xHistoire et critique. 001439000 650_6 $$aLittérature et médecine$$zGrande-Bretagne$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001439000 650_6 $$aLittérature et médecine$$zGrande-Bretagne$$xHistoire$$y20e siècle. 001439000 650_6 $$aMédecine dans la littérature. 001439000 650_6 $$aMédecine$$xDocumentation$$zGrande-Bretagne$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001439000 650_6 $$aMédecine$$xDocumentation$$zGrande-Bretagne$$xHistoire$$y20e siècle. 001439000 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001439000 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001439000 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439000 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aMoulds, Alison Sarah Elizabeth, 1989-$$tMedical identities and print culture, 1830s-1910s.$$dCham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030743451 001439000 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in literature, science, and medicine. 001439000 852__ $$bebk 001439000 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-74345-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439000 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439000$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439000 980__ $$aBIB 001439000 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439000 982__ $$aEbook 001439000 983__ $$aOnline 001439000 994__ $$a92$$bISE
