Robert Abele points out that this presupposes cognitive conditions that cannot be accounted for by empirical-linguistic analyses of language content or social conditions alone. Judgments rather assume both reason and a unified subject, and this requires recognition of a Kantian-type of transcendental dimension to them. Judgments are related to perception in that both are syntheses, defined as the unity of representations according to a rule/form. Perceptual syntheses are simultaneously pre-linguistic and proto-rational, and the understanding (Kants Verstand) makes these syntheses conceptually and thus self-consciously explicit. Abele concludes with a transcendental critique of postmodernism and what its deflationary view of ontological categoriessuch as the unified and reasoning subjecthas done to political thinking. He presents an alternative that calls for a return to normativity and a recognition of reason, objectivity, and the universality of principles. Robert Abele is Professor of Philosophy at Diablo Valley College, USA. He is the author of A User's Guide to the USA PATRIOT Act (2005); The Anatomy of a Deception: A Logical and Ethical Analysis of the Decision to Invade Iraq (2009); and contributed to the Encyclopedia of Global Justice (2012). 001439089 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed August 25, 2021). 001439089 650_0 $$aPolitical science$$xPhilosophy. 001439089 650_0 $$aJudgment (Logic) 001439089 650_0 $$aTranscendental logic. 001439089 650_0 $$aPostmodernism$$xPolitical aspects. 001439089 650_6 $$aJugement (Logique) 001439089 650_6 $$aLogique transcendantale. 001439089 650_6 $$aPostmodernisme$$xAspect politique. 001439089 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439089 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aABELE, ROBERT.$$tSELF-CONSCIOUS, THINKING SUBJECT.$$d[S.l.] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2021$$z303079556X$$w(OCoLC)1252961113 001439089 852__ $$bebk 001439089 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-79557-3$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439089 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439089$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439089 980__ $$aBIB 001439089 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439089 982__ $$aEbook 001439089 983__ $$aOnline 001439089 994__ $$a92$$bISE
