The editors and contributors argue that organizational resistance to gender equality is the key explanation; reflected in the endorsement of discourses such as excellence, choice, distorted intersectionality, revitalized biological essentialism and gender neutrality. These discourses implicitly and explicitly depict the status quo as appropriate, reasonable and fair: ultimately impeding attempts to promote gender equality. Drawing on research from around the world, this book explores the limits and possibilities of challenging these misleading discourses, focusing on the state and universities themselves as levers for change. It stresses the importance of institutional transformation, the vital contribution of feminist activists and the importance of womens deceptively small victories in the academy. Pat OConnor is Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and Visiting Professor at the Geary Institute, University College Dublin, Ireland. She is a sociologist with a focus on gender equality in higher education institutions: particularly leadership, excellence, micropolitics, gender-based violence, equality related interventions and womens academic careers. Kate White is Adjunct Associate Professor at Federation University Australia and Director of the Women in Higher Education Management Network. Her research focuses on gender equality and leadership in higher education, womens academic careers and women in science. 001439201 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001439201 650_0 $$aSex discrimination in higher education. 001439201 650_0 $$aEducation and globalization. 001439201 650_0 $$aEducational equalization. 001439201 650_0 $$aPower (Social sciences) 001439201 650_6 $$aDiscrimination sexuelle dans l'enseignement supérieur. 001439201 650_6 $$aÉducation et mondialisation. 001439201 650_6 $$aDémocratisation de l'enseignement. 001439201 650_6 $$aPouvoir (Sciences sociales) 001439201 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439201 7001_ $$aWhite, Kate,$$d1949 August 3-$$eeditor. 001439201 7001_ $$aO'Connor, Pat,$$d1950-$$eeditor. 001439201 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aO'Connor, Pat.$$tGender, Power and Higher Education in a Globalised World.$$dCham : Springer International Publishing AG, ©2021$$z9783030696863 001439201 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tGender, power and higher education in a globalised world$$z9783030696863$$w(OCoLC)1259523350 001439201 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in gender and education. 001439201 852__ $$bebk 001439201 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-69687-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439201 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439201$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439201 980__ $$aBIB 001439201 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439201 982__ $$aEbook 001439201 983__ $$aOnline 001439201 994__ $$a92$$bISE
