It also allows for international comparison by providing data on outcomes of extra-marital childbirth. Previously, it was believed that the idea of a second demographic transition did not apply to Japan, which had a relatively low rate of extra-marital fertility. However, more recently, though still at a low level, a subtle but gradual rise is seen in the number of women who become unmarried mothers as a result of births outside marriage. This trend suggests that the social environment surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, and marriage is changing. In this book, various data such as national statistics, nationwide surveys, and media discourse are analysed with a view to revealing the factors affecting unmarried women's decisions when they discover they are pregnant. Various matters are discussed, such as changes in sexual activity and contraceptive use, advance in reproductive technology, the law and government policies pertaining to adoption, social consciousness towards unwed mothers, the change in perception of abortion from the religious perspective, and difference of socioeconomic status depending on the women's occupation. 001439292 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed September 1, 2021). 001439292 650_0 $$aPregnancy$$zJapan. 001439292 650_0 $$aUnmarried mothers$$zJapan. 001439292 650_6 $$aGrossesse$$zJapon. 001439292 650_6 $$aMères célibataires$$zJapon. 001439292 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439292 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z981163548X$$z9789811635489$$w(OCoLC)1252412985 001439292 830_0 $$aPopulation studies of Japan,$$x2198-2732 001439292 830_0 $$aSpringerBriefs in population studies. 001439292 852__ $$bebk 001439292 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-16-3549-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439292 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439292$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439292 980__ $$aBIB 001439292 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439292 982__ $$aEbook 001439292 983__ $$aOnline 001439292 994__ $$a92$$bISE
