The chapters examine the symbolic role of the site in Englands Christian history, the London book trade based in and around St Pauls, the place of St Pauls commercial indoor playhouse within the performance culture of sixteenth and seventeenth-century London, and the intersection of religion and politics through events such as civic ceremonies and occasional sermons. Through the organising theme of culture, the authors demonstrate how the site, as well as the people and trades occupying the precinct, can be positioned within wider fields of representations, practices, and social networks. A focus on St Pauls is therefore about more than just the specific site on Ludgate Hill: it is about those practices and representations connected to it, which either extended beyond or originated in places other than the Cathedral environs. This points to the range of localised, regional, national, and transnational relationships in which the precinct and its people were situated and to which they contributed. 001439424 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed September 8, 2021). 001439424 61020 $$aSt. Paul's Cathedral (London, England)$$xHistory$$y16th century. 001439424 61020 $$aSt. Paul's Cathedral (London, England)$$xHistory$$y17th century. 001439424 61020 $$aSt. Paul's Cathedral (London, England)$$xIn literature. 001439424 651_0 $$aLondon (England)$$xIntellectual life$$y16th century. 001439424 651_0 $$aLondon (England)$$xIntellectual life$$y17th century. 001439424 651_6 $$aLondres (Angleterre)$$xVie intellectuelle$$y16e siècle. 001439424 651_6 $$aLondres (Angleterre)$$xVie intellectuelle$$y17e siècle. 001439424 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001439424 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439424 7001_ $$aAltman, Shanyn,$$eeditor. 001439424 7001_ $$aBuckner, Jonathan,$$eeditor. 001439424 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tOld St Paul's and culture.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030772666$$w(OCoLC)1259550002 001439424 830_0 $$aEarly modern literature in history (Palgrave (Firm)) 001439424 852__ $$bebk 001439424 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-77267-3$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439424 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439424$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439424 980__ $$aBIB 001439424 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439424 982__ $$aEbook 001439424 983__ $$aOnline 001439424 994__ $$a92$$bISE
