Upon excitation with an intense laser pulse, materials can undergo a nonthermal transition through pathways different from those in equilibrium. The mechanism underlying these photoinduced phase transitions has long been researched, but many details in this ultrafast, non-adiabatic regime still remain to be clarified. The work in this book reveals new insights into this phenomena via investigation of photoinduced melting and recovery of charge density waves (CDWs). Using several time-resolved diffraction and spectroscopic techniques, the author shows that the light-induced melting of a CDW is characterized by dynamical slowing-down, while the restoration of the symmetry-breaking order features two distinct timescales: A fast recovery of the CDW amplitude is followed by a slower re-establishment of phase coherence, the latter of which is dictated by the presence of topological defects in the CDW. Furthermore, after the suppression of the original CDW by photoexcitation, a different, competing CDW transiently emerges, illustrating how a hidden order in equilibrium can be unleashed by a laser pulse. These insights into CDW systems may be carried over to other broken-symmetry states, such as superconductivity and magnetic ordering, bringing us one step closer towards manipulating phases of matter using a laser pulse. 001439779 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed September 27, 2021). 001439779 650_0 $$aCharge density waves. 001439779 650_0 $$aPhase transformations (Statistical physics) 001439779 650_0 $$aBroken symmetry (Physics) 001439779 650_6 $$aOndes de densité de charge. 001439779 650_6 $$aTransitions de phase. 001439779 650_6 $$aSymétrie brisée (Physique) 001439779 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439779 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aZong, Alfred.$$tEmergent states in photoinduced charge-density-wave transitions.$$dCham : Springer, [2021]$$z3030817504$$z9783030817503$$w(OCoLC)1257890184 001439779 830_0 $$aSpringer theses.$$x2190-5061 001439779 852__ $$bebk 001439779 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-81751-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439779 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439779$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439779 980__ $$aBIB 001439779 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439779 982__ $$aEbook 001439779 983__ $$aOnline 001439779 994__ $$a92$$bISE
