Encompassing a protracted timeframe and embracing disparate social, political and cultural contexts, it analyses how and why war memorials and commemorative practices changed during this key period of social transition and imperial expansion. In assessing the motivations of the memorial organisers and the narratives they sought to convey, the author argues that developments in war commemoration were primarily influenced by and reflected broader socio-economic and political transformations occurring in nineteenth-century and early twentieth century Britain. Guy Hinton completed his PhD at Newcastle University, where he also taught British history and concepts of historiographical research. He has written on popular reactions to the Boer War and spoken at numerous academic conferences and to the wider community. Before returning to academia, Guy worked for fifteen years in the cultural sector. 001439783 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed September 21, 2021). 001439783 650_0 $$aWar memorials$$zEngland, North East. 001439783 650_0 $$aCollective memory$$zEngland, North East$$xHistory. 001439783 650_6 $$aMonuments aux morts$$zAngleterre (Nord-Est) 001439783 650_6 $$aMémoire collective$$zAngleterre (Nord-Est)$$xHistoire. 001439783 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xHistoriography. 001439783 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xSocial conditions$$y19th century. 001439783 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xSocial conditions$$y20th century. 001439783 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xPolitics and government$$y1837-1901. 001439783 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xPolitics and government$$y1901-1936. 001439783 651_6 $$aGrande-Bretagne$$xConditions sociales$$y19e siècle. 001439783 651_6 $$aGrande-Bretagne$$xConditions sociales$$y20e siècle. 001439783 651_6 $$aGrande-Bretagne$$xPolitique et gouvernement$$y1837-1901. 001439783 651_6 $$aGrande-Bretagne$$xPolitique et gouvernement$$y1901-1936. 001439783 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001439783 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001439783 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHinton, Guy.$$tWar commemoration and civic culture in the North East of England, 1854-1914.$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030785925$$w(OCoLC)1263816554 001439783 830_0 $$aBritain and the world. 001439783 852__ $$bebk 001439783 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-78593-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001439783 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1439783$$pGLOBAL_SET 001439783 980__ $$aBIB 001439783 980__ $$aEBOOK 001439783 982__ $$aEbook 001439783 983__ $$aOnline 001439783 994__ $$a92$$bISE
