Using the concepts of economic, industrial and enterprise democracy, the author focuses on the history of Finland and Sweden during the latter part of the twentieth century. The three concepts are discussed in relation to various political groups, such as social democrats, conservatives and liberals, and the reforms that they were associated with, painting a picture of changing economic thought in the Nordic countries, and the West more generally. Arguing that the concept of democracy has evolved from representative parliamentary democracy towards participation in civil society, this book demonstrates how the ideal of individual freedom and choice has surpassed collective decision-making. These shared characteristics between Finland, Sweden and other Western countries challenge the view that the Nordic countries have been exceptional in resisting neoliberalism. In fact, as this book shows, neoliberalism has been influential to the Nordics since the 1970s. Offering an innovative and conceptual perspective on European political history, this book will appeal to scholars interested in Nordic political history and modern European history more generally. Ilkka Karryla is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Nordic Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland. He received his doctorate in Political History from the University of Helsinki in 2020. He specializes in the political and intellectual history of Europe and the Nordic countries, especially the history of economic thought and policy. 001440197 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed October 2, 2021). 001440197 650_0 $$aNeoliberalism$$zFinland. 001440197 650_0 $$aNeoliberalism$$zSweden. 001440197 650_6 $$aNéo-libéralisme$$zFinlande. 001440197 650_6 $$aNéo-libéralisme$$zSuède. 001440197 651_0 $$aFinland$$xEconomic policy. 001440197 651_0 $$aSweden$$xEconomic policy. 001440197 651_0 $$aFinland$$xPolitics and government. 001440197 651_0 $$aSweden$$xPolitics and government. 001440197 651_6 $$aFinlande$$xPolitique et gouvernement. 001440197 651_6 $$aSuède$$xPolitique et gouvernement. 001440197 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001440197 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3030806308$$z9783030806309$$w(OCoLC)1255466472 001440197 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in political history. 001440197 852__ $$bebk 001440197 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-80631-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001440197 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1440197$$pGLOBAL_SET 001440197 980__ $$aBIB 001440197 980__ $$aEBOOK 001440197 982__ $$aEbook 001440197 983__ $$aOnline 001440197 994__ $$a92$$bISE
