Best known today for her important correspondence with the philosopher René Descartes, Elisabeth was famous in her own time for her learning, philosophical acumen, and mathematical brilliance. She was also well-connected in the seventeenth-century intellectual circles. Elisabeth's status as a woman philosopher is emblematic of both the possibilities and limitations of women's participation in the republic of letters and of their subsequent fate in history. Few sources containing her own views survive, and until recently there has been no work on Elisabeth as a thinker in her own right. This volume brings together an international team of scholars to discuss her work from a cross-disciplinary perspective on the occasion of her fourth centenary. It is the first collection of essays to examine a range of her interests and to discuss them in relation to her historical context. The studies presented here discuss her educational background, her friendships and contacts, her interest in politics, religion, and astronomy, as well as her views on politics, her moral philosophy and her engagement with Cartesianism. The volume will appeal to historians of philosophy, historians of political thought, philosophers, feminists and seventeenth-century historians. 001440229 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed October 19, 2021). 001440229 60000 $$aElizabeth,$$cQueen, consort of Frederick I, King of Bohemia,$$d1596-1662. 001440229 60000 $$aElizabeth,$$cQueen, consort of Frederick I, King of Bohemia,$$d1596-1662$$xPhilosophy. 001440229 650_0 $$aQueens$$zCzech Republic$$zBohemia$$vBiography. 001440229 650_0 $$aPrincesses$$zGreat Britain$$vBiography. 001440229 650_6 $$aReines$$zRépublique tchèque$$zBohême$$vBiographies. 001440229 655_7 $$aBiographies.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01919896 001440229 655_7 $$aBiographies.$$2lcgft 001440229 655_7 $$aBiographies.$$2rvmgf 001440229 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001440229 7001_ $$aEbbersmeyer, Sabrina,$$eeditor. 001440229 7001_ $$aHutton, Sarah,$$d1948-$$eeditor. 001440229 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3030715264$$z9783030715267$$w(OCoLC)1237630615 001440229 830_0 $$aWomen in the history of philosophy and sciences ;$$vv. 9.$$x2523-8779 001440229 852__ $$bebk 001440229 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-71527-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001440229 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1440229$$pGLOBAL_SET 001440229 980__ $$aBIB 001440229 980__ $$aEBOOK 001440229 982__ $$aEbook 001440229 983__ $$aOnline 001440229 994__ $$a92$$bISE
