Focusing on the collisions that took place in Bombay during the 1820s, the book analyses how Indians of various descriptionspeasants, revenue defaulters, government employees, merchants, chiefs, and princesused the court to challenge the government (and vice versa) and demonstrates the mechanism through which the lawcourt hindered the governments indirect rule, which relied on local Indian rulers in newly conquered territories. The author concludes that existing political anxiety justified the East India Companys attempt to curtail the power of the court and strengthen their own power to intervene in emergencies through the renewal of the companys charter in 1834. An insightful read for those researching Indian history and judicial politics, this book engages with an understudied period of British rule in India, where the royal courts emerged as sites of conflict between the East India Company and a variety of Indian powers. Haruki Inagaki is Associate Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan, having previously studied at Kings College London, UK. His research focuses on the history of British colonial rule in India. He is also interested in the comparative history of British and Japanese empires. 001440274 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001440274 61020 $$aEast India Company. 001440274 650_0 $$aCourts$$zIndia$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001440274 650_0 $$aJustice, Administration of$$zIndia$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001440274 650_0 $$aRule of law$$zIndia$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001440274 650_6 $$aTribunaux$$zInde$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001440274 650_6 $$aRègle de droit$$zInde$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001440274 651_0 $$aIndia$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001440274 651_6 $$aInde$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001440274 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001440274 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001440274 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aInagaki, Haruki.$$tRule of law and emergency in colonial India.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030736620$$w(OCoLC)1264403744 001440274 830_0 $$aCambridge imperial and post-colonial studies series. 001440274 852__ $$bebk 001440274 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-73663-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001440274 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1440274$$pGLOBAL_SET 001440274 980__ $$aBIB 001440274 980__ $$aEBOOK 001440274 982__ $$aEbook 001440274 983__ $$aOnline 001440274 994__ $$a92$$bISE
