Invented by Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz in 1935, lobotomy or psychosurgery became widely used in a number of countries, including Denmark, where the treatment had a major breakthrough. In fact, evidence suggests that more lobotomies were performed in Denmark than any other country. However, the reason behind this unofficial world record has not yet been fully understood. Lobotomy Nation traces the history of psychosurgery and its ties to other psychiatric treatments such as malaria fever therapy, Cardiazol shock and insulin coma therapy, but it also situates lobotomy within a broader context. The book argues that the rise and fall of lobotomy is not just a story about psychiatry, it is also about society, culture and interventions towards vulnerable groups in the 20th century. Jesper Vaczy Kragh is Senior Researcher in the Copenhagen Centre for Health Research in the Humanities (CoRe) at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He has worked on research projects on the history of forensic psychiatry, Nordic psychology, drug abuse in the 19th and early 20th century and the history of vulnerable groups, 19451980. He is Co-Editor of the book, Social Class and Mental Illness in Northern Europe (2020). 001440280 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001440280 650_0 $$aFrontal lobotomy$$zDenmark$$xHistory. 001440280 650_0 $$aPsychosurgery$$zDenmark$$xHistory. 001440280 650_6 $$aLobotomie frontale$$zDanemark$$xHistoire. 001440280 650_6 $$aPsychochirurgie$$zDanemark$$xHistoire. 001440280 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001440280 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001440280 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aKragh, Jesper Vaczy.$$tLobotomy nation.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030653057$$w(OCoLC)1264404537 001440280 830_0 $$aMental health in historical perspective. 001440280 852__ $$bebk 001440280 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-65306-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001440280 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1440280$$pGLOBAL_SET 001440280 980__ $$aBIB 001440280 980__ $$aEBOOK 001440280 982__ $$aEbook 001440280 983__ $$aOnline 001440280 994__ $$a92$$bISE
