It traces the complexity of effects and responses, at different scales, through the first critical year. Written by a range of scholars and practitioners working in the region the book focuses on six key themes: public health; the economies (notably the collapse of tourism, the revival of local agriculture and fishing, and the rebirth of self-reliance, and even barter); the rescue by remittances; social tensions and responses; public policy; and future bubbles and regional connections. Even with marine borders that excluded the virus all island states were affected by COVID-19 because of a considerable dependence on tourism prompting urgent challenges for governance, economic management and development, as small states sought to balance lives against livelihoods in search of revitalisation or even a new normal. Yonique Campbell received a DPhil (PhD) from the University of Oxford and is a Senior Lecturer in Public Policy & Management in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, Mona. She also serves as a policy advisor to the Minister of Health and Wellness (Government of Jamaica). John Connell is Professor of Geography in the School of Geosciences, University of Sydney. He works mainly on small island development issues in the Pacific region and has published several books on migration and colonialism. 001440694 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed November 4, 2021). 001440694 650_0 $$aCOVID-19 (Disease)$$zWest Indies. 001440694 650_0 $$aCOVID-19 (Disease)$$zIslands of the Pacific. 001440694 650_0 $$aCOVID-19 (Disease)$$xEconomic aspects$$zWest Indies. 001440694 650_0 $$aCOVID-19 (Disease)$$xEconomic aspects$$zIslands of the Pacific. 001440694 650_0 $$aCOVID-19 (Disease)$$xSocial aspects$$zWest Indies. 001440694 650_0 $$aCOVID-19 (Disease)$$xSocial aspects$$zIslands of the Pacific. 001440694 650_6 $$aCOVID-19$$zAntilles. 001440694 650_6 $$aCOVID-19$$zPacifique, Îles du. 001440694 650_6 $$aCOVID-19$$xAspect économique$$zAntilles. 001440694 650_6 $$aCOVID-19$$xAspect économique$$zPacifique, Îles du. 001440694 650_6 $$aCOVID-19$$xAspect social$$zAntilles. 001440694 650_6 $$aCOVID-19$$xAspect social$$zPacifique, Îles du. 001440694 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001440694 7001_ $$aCampbell, Yonique,$$d1983-$$eeditor. 001440694 7001_ $$aConnell, John,$$d1946-$$eeditor. 001440694 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tCOVID in the islands.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9789811652844$$w(OCoLC)1264400470 001440694 852__ $$bebk 001440694 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-16-5285-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001440694 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1440694$$pGLOBAL_SET 001440694 980__ $$aBIB 001440694 980__ $$aEBOOK 001440694 982__ $$aEbook 001440694 983__ $$aOnline 001440694 994__ $$a92$$bISE
