In Muslim Heroes on Screen, Daniel OBrien explores the depiction of these characters in Euro-American cinema from the silent era to the present day. Far from being mere racial masquerade, these screen portrayals are more complex and nuanced than is generally allowed, not least in terms of the shifting concepts and assumptions that inform their Muslim identity. Using films ranging from Douglas Fairbanks The Thief of Bagdad, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, El Cid, Kingdom of Heaven and The Message to The Wind and the Lion, OBrien considers how the representational strategies of Western filmmakers may transcend such Muslim stereotypes as fanatic antagonists or passive victims. These figures possess a cultural significance which cannot be fully appreciated by Euro-American audiences without reference to their distinction as Muslim heroes and the implications and resonances of an Islamicized protagonist. Daniel OBrien is a writer and part-time lecturer in film studies, and has worked for both the Department of Film and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton, UK. His previous books include Classical Masculinity and the Spectacular Body on Film (Palgrave, 2014) and Black Masculinity on Film (Palgrave, 2017). 001441224 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCOhost platform, viewed April 21, 2022). 001441224 650_0 $$aMuslims in motion pictures. 001441224 650_0 $$aMotion pictures$$xHistory. 001441224 650_6 $$aMusulmans au cinéma. 001441224 650_6 $$aCinéma$$xHistoire. 001441224 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001441224 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001441224 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aO'Brien, Daniel.$$tMuslim heroes on screen.$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan, [2021]$$z9783030741419$$w(OCoLC)1272892124 001441224 852__ $$bebk 001441224 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-74142-6$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001441224 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1441224$$pGLOBAL_SET 001441224 980__ $$aBIB 001441224 980__ $$aEBOOK 001441224 982__ $$aEbook 001441224 983__ $$aOnline 001441224 994__ $$a92$$bISE
