The use of case studies from this region problematises an often assumed national or generalised experience of civilian life during the war, by shifting the frame of analysis away from the metropolis. This book begins with chapters related to wartime resilience, including analysis of pre-war fear of invasion and bombardment, and government policy on public safety. It then moves on to a discussion of power relations and the local implementation of policy related to bombardment, including policing. Finally, the book explores the coastal-urban environment, focusing on depictions of war damage in popular culture, and the wartime and post-war commemoration of civilian bombardment. This work provides a multi-faceted perspective on civilian resilience, while responding to a recent call for new histories of the coastal zone. 001441448 647_7 $$aWorld War$$d(1914-1918)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01180746 001441448 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1914-1918$$zEngland. 001441448 650_0 $$aCivilians in war$$zEngland$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001441448 650_0 $$aWar and society$$zEngland$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001441448 650_0 $$aCivilians in war$$zEngland, North East$$xHistory$$y20th century$$vCase studies. 001441448 650_0 $$aWorld War, 1914-1918$$zEngland, North East$$vCase studies. 001441448 650_0 $$aWar and society$$zEngland, North East$$xHistory$$y20th century$$vCase studies. 001441448 650_6 $$aGuerre mondiale, 1914-1918$$zAngleterre. 001441448 655_7 $$aCase studies.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01423765 001441448 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001441448 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001441448 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030868512 001441448 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3030868508$$z9783030868505$$w(OCoLC)1263867286 001441448 830_0 $$aGlobal studies in social and cultural maritime history. 001441448 852__ $$bebk 001441448 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-86851-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001441448 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1441448$$pGLOBAL_SET 001441448 980__ $$aBIB 001441448 980__ $$aEBOOK 001441448 982__ $$aEbook 001441448 983__ $$aOnline 001441448 994__ $$a92$$bISE
