It analyses the work of three contemporary authors who write the Indian Ocean as a region and worldAmitav Ghosh, Abdulrazak Gurnah, and Lindsey Collenalongside maritime-imperial precursor Joseph Conrad. If postcolonial literatures are sometimes read as national allegories, this book presents an account of a different and significant strand of postcolonial fiction whose geography, in contrast, is coastal and transoceanic. This work imaginatively links east Africa, south Asia and the Arab world via a network of south-south connections that precedes and survives European imperialism. The novels and stories provide a vivid, storied sense of place on both a local and an oceanic scale, and in so doing remap the world as having its centre in the ocean and the south. Charne Lavery is a Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Pretoria and Research Fellow on the Oceanic Humanities for the Global South project based at WISER, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. 001441721 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001441721 60010 $$aGhosh, Amitav,$$d1956-$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001441721 60010 $$aGurnah, Abdulrazak,$$d1948-$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001441721 60010 $$aCollen, Lindsey$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001441721 60010 $$aConrad, Joseph,$$d1857-1924$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001441721 650_0 $$aIndian Ocean literature (English)$$xHistory and criticism. 001441721 650_0 $$aPostcolonialism in literature. 001441721 650_0 $$aImperialism in literature. 001441721 650_6 $$aPostcolonialisme dans la littérature. 001441721 650_6 $$aImpérialisme dans la littérature. 001441721 651_0 $$aIndian Ocean Region$$xIn literature. 001441721 651_6 $$aIndien, Région de l'océan$$xDans la littérature. 001441721 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001441721 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001441721 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aLavery, Charne, 1984-$$tWriting ocean worlds.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2021$$z9783030871154$$w(OCoLC)1272869338 001441721 830_0 $$aNew comparisons in world literature. 001441721 852__ $$bebk 001441721 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-87116-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001441721 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1441721$$pGLOBAL_SET 001441721 980__ $$aBIB 001441721 980__ $$aEBOOK 001441721 982__ $$aEbook 001441721 983__ $$aOnline 001441721 994__ $$a92$$bISE
