The author combines ethnographic exploration of how trust is formed in the local context with insights about postcolonial inequalities, which structure discourses on development and climate change in ways that exclude local actors. Empirically, the book follows the complicated engagements of local concession-holding forest communities with outside actors aiming to develop archaeology-based tourism in Guatemalas Maya Biosphere Reserve. A central argument presented is that processes initiated for societal improvement need to be based on trusting relationships in order to be successful. This requires a context sensitive approach that takes into consideration how trust is formed and undermined in specific lifeworlds, as well as postcolonial inequalities. Theoretically, the book expands existing conceptualisations of trust and emphasises the potential for ethnographic research to further our understanding of this elusive phenomenon. Margit Ystanes is Associate Professor at Volda University College, Norway. The present work represents a further development and confluence of two lines of research represented by Ystaness two co-edited volumes, Trusting and Its Tribulations: Interdisciplinary Engagements with Intimacy, Sociality and Trust (with Vigdis Broch-Due, 2016) and The Social Life of Economic Inequalities in Contemporary Latin America: Decades of Change (with Iselin Asedotter Strnen, 2018). 001441752 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001441752 650_0 $$aForest conservation$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_0 $$aEconomic development$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_0 $$aTrust$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_0 $$aPostcolonialism$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_6 $$aForêts$$xConservation$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_6 $$aDéveloppement économique$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_6 $$aConfiance$$zGuatemala. 001441752 650_6 $$aPostcolonialisme$$zGuatemala. 001441752 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001441752 77608 $$iPrint version :$$aYstanes, Margit.$$t(Mis)trusting development.$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan, [2021]$$z9783030893194$$w(OCoLC)1285689330 001441752 852__ $$bebk 001441752 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-89320-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001441752 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1441752$$pGLOBAL_SET 001441752 980__ $$aBIB 001441752 980__ $$aEBOOK 001441752 982__ $$aEbook 001441752 983__ $$aOnline 001441752 994__ $$a92$$bISE
