In contrast, theoretical and empirical work in the 20th and early 21st centuries have returned mixed results regarding this assertion. The book also demonstrates the impracticality of any attempt to pursue prosperity in isolation. Chapter 1 discusses recent data and research on international trade and capital mobility. Chapter 2 describes the economy of Vietnam that has grown rapidly since beginning to open in 1994. Chapter 3 relates the stagnation of the Philippines as it remained closed from 1960 to 1994 and examines the recent rapid growth in spite of the continued relative restrictiveness of Philippine policy. Chapter 4 compares the two experiences and then conjectures about the feasibility of a prosperous autarky. Roderick Macdonald lectures in international business at the International School of Business of the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. He has published Eurocritical (2018), Southeast Asia and the ASEAN Economic Community (2019), and The Economy and Business Environment of Vietnam (2020) with Palgrave Macmillan since retiring from ESG-UQAM, Canada. 001442887 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed December 1, 2021). 001442887 650_0 $$aComparative economics. 001442887 650_6 $$aÉconomie politique comparée. 001442887 651_0 $$aVietnam$$xEconomic conditions. 001442887 651_0 $$aPhilippines$$xEconomic conditions. 001442887 651_0 $$aVietnam$$xForeign economic relations$$xHistory. 001442887 651_0 $$aPhilippines$$xForeign economic relations$$xHistory. 001442887 651_0 $$aVietnam$$xEconomic policy. 001442887 651_0 $$aPhilippines$$xEconomic policy. 001442887 651_6 $$aViêt-nam$$xConditions économiques. 001442887 651_6 $$aPhilippines$$xConditions économiques. 001442887 651_6 $$aViêt-nam$$xPolitique économique. 001442887 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001442887 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001442887 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aMACDONALD, RODERICK.$$tOPEN AND CLOSED ECONOMIES.$$d[S.l.] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2021$$z3030795330$$w(OCoLC)1252962079 001442887 830_0 $$aPalgrave pivot. 001442887 852__ $$bebk 001442887 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-79534-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001442887 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1442887$$pGLOBAL_SET 001442887 980__ $$aBIB 001442887 980__ $$aEBOOK 001442887 982__ $$aEbook 001442887 983__ $$aOnline 001442887 994__ $$a92$$bISE
