While the search for explanations is still ongoing, Christian Neugebauer draws attention to a hitherto underresearched factor: economic liberalization. Being part of a global shift from state-led development towards structural adjustment in the economy, these policies also deeply affected the countries of the MENA region. This makes the resilience of authoritarianism in the region all the more puzzling, as a large part of the scientific community expected economic liberalization to undermine authoritarian regimes. Neugebauer strives to solve the puzzle with a comparative case study that covers four countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, and Morocco) and their political regimes, from independence in the 1950s to the Arab Spring in 2011. He shows that two specific policies of economic liberalization might in fact have been relevant for regime stability: consumer-price liberalization and privatization. About the author Christian Neugebauer was a PhD candidate and lecturer in political economy of the Middle East and North Africa at the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies (CNMS), University of Marburg, Germany. He currently works as a regional expert (Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey) for an institution of the private economy. 001443021 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed December20, 2021). 001443021 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xEconomic conditions$$y1979- 001443021 651_0 $$aAfrica, North$$xEconomic conditions. 001443021 651_6 $$aMoyen-Orient$$xConditions économiques$$y1979- 001443021 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001443021 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aNeugebauer, Christian.$$tEconomic Liberalization and Authoritarianism.$$dWiesbaden : Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, ©2022$$z9783658356385 001443021 830_0 $$aPolitik und Gesellschaft des Nahen Ostens. 001443021 852__ $$bebk 001443021 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-658-35639-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001443021 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1443021$$pGLOBAL_SET 001443021 980__ $$aBIB 001443021 980__ $$aEBOOK 001443021 982__ $$aEbook 001443021 983__ $$aOnline 001443021 994__ $$a92$$bISE
