These regional institutions have spread globally. While their institutional designs have become increasingly similar over time, regional particularities persist. The book identifies factors that generate the demand for regional institutions and shape its institutional design. The argument combines hitherto juxtaposed explanatory factors of demands and diffusion by integrating them in a single framework and clarifying under what conditions the interplay between demands and diffusion plays out in the adoption and design of regional institutions. The book provides a comprehensive overview of regional democracy, human rights, and rule of law institutions based on two original datasets and draws on multivariate statistical analysis as well as case studies on the making and change of regional institutions in the Organization of American States and the Organization of African Unity/African Union. Soren Stapel is postdoctoral researcher at the University of Freiburg, Germany. His research interests include global and regional governance, norm and policy diffusion, human rights, and overlapping regionalism. He recently published Comparing Regional Organizations (Bristol University Press, 2020, with Diana Panke and Anna Starkmann). 001443648 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001443648 61020 $$aAfrican Union$$1https://isni.org/isni/0000000121899463 001443648 61020 $$aOrganization of American States$$1https://isni.org/isni/0000000121765780 001443648 650_0 $$aRegionalism (International organization) 001443648 650_0 $$aDemocracy. 001443648 650_0 $$aHuman rights. 001443648 650_0 $$aRule of law. 001443648 650_6 $$aRégionalisme (Politique internationale) 001443648 650_6 $$aDroits de l'homme (Droit international) 001443648 650_6 $$aRègle de droit. 001443648 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001443648 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aStapel, Sören.$$tRegional organizations and democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2022$$z9783030903978$$w(OCoLC)1289283332 001443648 830_0 $$aGovernance and limited statehood series. 001443648 852__ $$bebk 001443648 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-90398-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001443648 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1443648$$pGLOBAL_SET 001443648 980__ $$aBIB 001443648 980__ $$aEBOOK 001443648 982__ $$aEbook 001443648 983__ $$aOnline 001443648 994__ $$a92$$bISE
