Whilst the institution has been briefly mentioned in literary studies focusing on the poet and politician Andrew Marvell, it has never been the sole focus of an economic, financial, commercial, or political study in its own right. As such, nothing is known of how it operated, where it sits in the history of English finance, why it collapsed, or what it can tell us about wider Restoration society and its economic and political culture. Through a microhistorical study, the book reconstructs the institution of Thompson and Company, the social networks of its partners, the identity of its creditors, and the events and circumstances that led to its collapse. The book situates the reconstructed institution within its economic, commercial, financial, and political contexts, using the evidence accrued to question the traditional narrative of financial and commercial development, credit systems, the relationship between economics, finance, commerce and politics, and the place of risk and strategy in gendered relations, credit, and social status. The book will be of interest to academics and students in economic history, financial and business history. Mabel Winter has recently completed her PhD in socio-economic history at the University of Sheffield. 001443953 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed January 25, 2022). 001443953 61020 $$aRichard Thompson and Company (London, England) 001443953 650_0 $$aBanks and banking$$zEngland$$xHistory$$y17th century. 001443953 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001443953 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001443953 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aWinter, Mabel$$tBanking, Projecting and Politicking in Early Modern England$$dCham : Springer International Publishing AG,c2022$$z9783030905699 001443953 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in economic history,$$x2662-6500 001443953 852__ $$bebk 001443953 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-90570-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001443953 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1443953$$pGLOBAL_SET 001443953 980__ $$aBIB 001443953 980__ $$aEBOOK 001443953 982__ $$aEbook 001443953 983__ $$aOnline 001443953 994__ $$a92$$bISE
