These working-class homes are often imagined as distinctly unhomely spaces, which the inhabitants struggled to fill with even the most basic of furniture, let alone acquire the comforts associated with middle-class domestic space. The concerned reformers of industrialising towns and cities painted a picture of severe deprivation, of rooms that were both cramped yet bare at the same time, and disease-ridden spaces from which their subjects required rescue. It is an image which is not only inadequate, but which also robs working-class people of their agency in creating domestic spaces which allowed for the expression of personal and familial feeling. Bringing together emerging scholars who challenge these ideas and using a range of innovative sources and approaches, this edited collection presents a new understanding of working-class homes. Vicky Holmes is Visiting Research Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London, UK in association with the Centre for Studies of Home. Her Palgrave Pivot, In Bed with the Victorians: The Life-Cycle of Working-Class Marriage, was published in 2017. Joseph Harley is Lecturer in History at Anglia Ruskin University, UK. He has recently published Norfolk Pauper Inventories, c.1690-1834 (2020) and has articles in various journals including Agricultural History Review, Historical Journal and Social History. Laika Nevalainen is a historian of everyday life in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Finland. 001444569 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001444569 650_0 $$aWorking class$$xDwellings$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001444569 650_6 $$aTravailleurs$$xHabitations$$zGrande-Bretagne$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001444569 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xSocial conditions$$y19th century. 001444569 651_6 $$aGrande-Bretagne$$xConditions sociales$$y19e siècle. 001444569 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001444569 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001444569 7001_ $$aHarley, Joseph,$$eeditor. 001444569 7001_ $$aHolmes, Vicky,$$eeditor. 001444569 7001_ $$aNevalainen, Laika,$$eeditor. 001444569 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tWorking class at home, 1790-1940.$$dCham : Palgrave Macmillan, [2022]$$z9783030892739$$w(OCoLC)1285686656 001444569 852__ $$bebk 001444569 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-89273-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001444569 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1444569$$pGLOBAL_SET 001444569 980__ $$aBIB 001444569 980__ $$aEBOOK 001444569 982__ $$aEbook 001444569 983__ $$aOnline 001444569 994__ $$a92$$bISE
