After a short revival due to the humanistic rediscovery of his works, the influence of the great ancient physician on Western thought seemed to decline rapidly as new discoveries made his anatomy, physiology, and therapeutics more and more obsolete. In fact, even though Galenism was gradually dismissed as a system, several of his ideas spread through the modern world and left their mark on natural philosophy, rational theology, teleology, physiology, biology, botany, and the philosophy of medicine. Without Galen, none of these modern disciplines would have been the same. Linking Renaissance with the Enlightenment, the eleven chapters of this book offer a unique and detailed survey of both scientific and philosophical Galenisms from the sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. Figures discussed include Julius Caesar Scaliger, Giambattista Da Monte, Hyeronimus Fabricius ab Aquapendente, Andrea Cesalpino, Thomas Browne, Kenelm Digby, Henry More, Ralph Cudworth, Robert Boyle, John Locke, Guillaume Lamy, Jean-Baptiste Verduc, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Christian Wolff, Julien Offray de La Mettrie, Denis Diderot, and Kurt Sprengel. 001445110 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed March 17, 2022). 001445110 60000 $$aGalen. 001445110 650_0 $$aPhilosophy, Ancient. 001445110 650_6 $$aPhilosophie ancienne. 001445110 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001445110 7001_ $$aFavaretti Camposampiero, Matteo,$$d1974- 001445110 7001_ $$aScribano, Maria Emanuela,$$d1948- 001445110 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aFavaretti Camposampiero, Matteo.$$tGalen and the Early Moderns.$$dCham : Springer International Publishing AG, ©2022$$z9783030863074 001445110 830_0 $$aArchives internationales d'histoire des idées ;$$vv. 236. 001445110 852__ $$bebk 001445110 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-86308-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001445110 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1445110$$pGLOBAL_SET 001445110 980__ $$aBIB 001445110 980__ $$aEBOOK 001445110 982__ $$aEbook 001445110 983__ $$aOnline 001445110 994__ $$a92$$bISE
