The central theme of the book is a cross-border critical ethnographic study of the shadow education practices of an overseas Japanese business community in Singapore which draws attention to the elaborate extent to which families are engaged in shadow or cram tutoring practices as part of their childrens education, supported by the strong presence of overseas branches of well-established corporate tutoring businesses headquartered in Japan. The author ultimately critiques a banking approach to education, particularly in terms of its oppressive and dehumanizing outcomes, sustained by the inner workings of neoliberal forces and mercantilist ideologies. Glenn Toh is Senior Lecturer at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Before returning to Singapore, Glenn taught in Tamagawa University in Tokyo and in the City University of Hong Kong. He has published books on language, ideology, power, and education and maintains a keen interest on developments in the area. 001445288 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001445288 650_0 $$aNon-formal education$$zSingapore. 001445288 650_0 $$aNon-formal education$$zJapan. 001445288 650_0 $$aTutors and tutoring$$zSingapore. 001445288 650_0 $$aTutors and tutoring$$zJapan. 001445288 650_6 $$aÉducation non formelle$$zSingapour. 001445288 650_6 $$aÉducation non formelle$$zJapon. 001445288 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001445288 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aTOH, GLENN.$$tCROSS-BORDER SHADOW EDUCATION AND CRITICAL PEDAGOGY.$$d[Place of publication not identified] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2022$$z3030928314$$w(OCoLC)1285163614 001445288 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies on global policy and critical futures in education education. 001445288 852__ $$bebk 001445288 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-92832-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001445288 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1445288$$pGLOBAL_SET 001445288 980__ $$aBIB 001445288 980__ $$aEBOOK 001445288 982__ $$aEbook 001445288 983__ $$aOnline 001445288 994__ $$a92$$bISE
