The identification and analysis of different informal fallacies is central in the approach adopted by the authors, and they privilege the role of covert intentions as a frequent ingredient of manipulation. They also show how different speakers can use different subtypes of the same fallacy in a debate, and investigate the tension between the policy preferences and goals of politicians, and existing laws. The book has been written without jargon, all concepts and terminology from the field of linguistic pragmatics are clearly defined, and it is accessible to the interested layperson wishing to become familiar with manipulative techniques in political rhetoric. 001447281 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (ProQuest Ebook Central platform, viewed September 14, 2022). 001447281 61010 $$aUnited States.$$bCongress$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001447281 650_0 $$aPolitical oratory$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001447281 650_0 $$aFallacies (Logic)$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001447281 650_0 $$aLinguistics$$xPhilosophy. 001447281 650_0 $$aManipulative behavior$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001447281 650_0 $$aDebates and debating$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001447281 650_0 $$aCommunication in politics$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001447281 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xPolitics and government$$y1789-1809. 001447281 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001447281 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001447281 7001_ $$aRickman, Paul,$$d1973-$$eauthor. 001447281 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aRudanko, Martti Juhani.$$tManipulative fallacies in early America.$$dCham, Switzerland : Palgrave Macmillan, [2022]$$z9783030999322$$w(OCoLC)1328031088 001447281 830_0 $$aPalgrave pivot. 001447281 852__ $$bebk 001447281 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-99933-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001447281 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1447281$$pGLOBAL_SET 001447281 980__ $$aBIB 001447281 980__ $$aEBOOK 001447281 982__ $$aEbook 001447281 983__ $$aOnline 001447281 994__ $$a92$$bISE
