It focuses on the future kings Umberto I (1844-1900) and Vittorio Emanuele III (1869-1947), and their respective spouses, Margherita of Savoia (1851-1926) and Elena of Montenegro (1873-1952). It sheds light on the soft power the Italian royals were attempting to generate, by identifying and examining four specific areas of monarchical activity: firstly, the heirs public role and the manner in which they attempted to craft an Italian identity through a process of self-presentation; secondly, the national, royal, linguistic and military education of the heirs; thirdly, the promotion of a family-centred dynasty deploying both male and female elements in the public realm; and finally the readiness to embrace different modes of mobility in the construction of italianita. By analysing the growing importance of the royal heirs and their performance on the public stage in post-Risorgimento Italy, this study investigates the attempted construction of a cohesive national identity through the crown and, more specifically, the heirs to the throne. 001447383 588__ $$aCIP data; resource not viewed. 001447383 60030 $$aSavoia, House of. 001447383 60000 $$aUmberto$$bI,$$cKing of Italy,$$d1844-1900. 001447383 60000 $$aMargherita,$$cQueen, consort of Umberto I, King of Italy,$$d1851-1926. 001447383 60000 $$aVictor Emmanuel$$bIII,$$cKing of Italy,$$d1869-1947. 001447383 60000 $$aElena,$$cQueen, consort of Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy,$$d1873-1952. 001447383 650_0 $$aNationalism$$zItaly$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001447383 650_0 $$aNationalism$$zItaly$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001447383 651_0 $$aItaly$$xPolitics and government$$y1870- 001447383 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001447383 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001447383 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783030845841 001447383 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in modern monarchy. 001447383 852__ $$bebk 001447383 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-030-84585-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001447383 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1447383$$pGLOBAL_SET 001447383 980__ $$aBIB 001447383 980__ $$aEBOOK 001447383 982__ $$aEbook 001447383 983__ $$aOnline 001447383 994__ $$a92$$bISE
