What Tolstoys short story shows us, the author argues, is that life can be truly liberated through death only when we see that death is neither a supernatural event nor a natural end but involves a work of love. In Part 1 of his study, the author addresses the common assumptions that give rise to the idea that religious and secular views of life and death are opposed in modernity. He also examines the history of values that Tolstoys story embodies. In Part 2, he analyses the life and death of Ivan Ilyich in order to show that the values that are embedded in Tolstoys story are at once religious and secular. 001448083 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed July 14, 2022). 001448083 60010 $$aTolstoy, Leo,$$cgraf,$$d1828-1910.$$tSmertʹ Ivana Ilʹicha. 001448083 60010 $$aTolstoy, Leo,$$cgraf,$$d1828-1910$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448083 650_0 $$aDeath in literature. 001448083 650_0 $$aLife in literature. 001448083 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001448083 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001448083 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z303107615X$$z9783031076152$$w(OCoLC)1319073780 001448083 830_0 $$aPalgrave pivot. 001448083 852__ $$bebk 001448083 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-07616-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001448083 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1448083$$pGLOBAL_SET 001448083 980__ $$aBIB 001448083 980__ $$aEBOOK 001448083 982__ $$aEbook 001448083 983__ $$aOnline 001448083 994__ $$a92$$bISE
