It offers an alternative to predominantly novel-centric and Anglo-centric perspectives on literary pre-modernism by investigating a transnational and multilingual connection between genre, theme and theory, i.e., between the modern short story, the supernatural and the problem of knowledge. Incorporating a close analysis of the literary texts into a discussion of their historical context, the book argues that Machado, James and Maupassant explore and reinvent the supernatural short story as a metafictional genre. This modernized and innovative form allows them to challenge the dichotomies and conventions of realist and supernatural fiction, inviting their past and present readers to question common assumptions on reality and literary representation. Amandio Reis is a Research Fellow and member of the Centre for Comparative Studies at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. He is the editor-in-chief of Compendium: Journal of Comparative Studies. He has taught comparative literature, Romantic poetry and painting, and contemporary and late nineteenth-century short fiction. His work is mostly focused on narrative theory, comparative literature, and interarts studies, with a special focus on the late nineteenth century and transatlantic modernisms. 001448145 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001448145 60010 $$aMachado de Assis,$$d1839-1908$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448145 60010 $$aJames, Henry,$$d1843-1916$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448145 60010 $$aMaupassant, Guy de,$$d1850-1893$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448145 650_0 $$aSupernatural in literature. 001448145 650_0 $$aParanormal fiction$$xHistory and criticism. 001448145 650_0 $$aShort story. 001448145 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001448145 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001448145 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3031066804$$z9783031066801$$w(OCoLC)1312149909 001448145 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aReis, Amândio, 1989- author.$$tShort stories, knowledge and the supernatural$$z9783031066801$$w(OCoLC)1334127812 001448145 852__ $$bebk 001448145 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-06681-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001448145 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1448145$$pGLOBAL_SET 001448145 980__ $$aBIB 001448145 980__ $$aEBOOK 001448145 982__ $$aEbook 001448145 983__ $$aOnline 001448145 994__ $$a92$$bISE
