It is based on a key observation about four major poets from both sides of the Atlantic: Seamus Heaney, Gwendolyn Brooks, Tony Harrison, and Lucille Clifton all respond to societal crises by arranging, reproducing, and reconceiving their particular versions of local speech in poetic form. The books overarching claim is that "local tongues" in poetry have the capacity to bridge aesthetic and sociopolitical realms because nonstandard local speech declares its distinction from the status quo and binds people who have been subordinated by hierarchical social conditions, while harnessing those versions of speech into poetic structures can actively counter the very hierarchies that would degrade those languages. The diverse local tongues of these four poets marshaled into the forms of poetry situate them at once in literary tradition, in local contexts, and in prevailing social constructs. 001448635 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001448635 60010 $$aHeaney, Seamus,$$d1939-2013$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448635 60010 $$aBrooks, Gwendolyn,$$d1917-2000$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448635 60010 $$aHarrison, Tony,$$d1937-$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448635 60010 $$aClifton, Lucille,$$d1936-2010$$xCriticism and interpretation. 001448635 650_0 $$aSpeech in literature. 001448635 650_0 $$aRhetoric$$xPolitical aspects. 001448635 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001448635 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001448635 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aFogarty, William.$$tPolitics of speech in later twentieth-century poetry.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2022$$z9783031078880$$w(OCoLC)1328017089 001448635 830_0 $$aModern and contemporary poetry and poetics. 001448635 852__ $$bebk 001448635 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-07889-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001448635 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1448635$$pGLOBAL_SET 001448635 980__ $$aBIB 001448635 980__ $$aEBOOK 001448635 982__ $$aEbook 001448635 983__ $$aOnline 001448635 994__ $$a92$$bISE
