In her empirical study, Sarah J. Grünendahl explores and juxtaposes how well the two war resister 'generations' have been able to establish themselves after all and to what extent they partake in Canadian society. The comparison is instructive for migration and refugee studies altogether: The war resisters in the sample, unlike many other migrant populations, did not have to contend with language and cultural barriers in their destination country, given similarities between the United States and Canada. Sarah J. Grünendahl's research thus allows for an analysis of the effects of residency on migrants' adaptation and participation in the receiving society, isolated from these two common barriers. Further, the study sheds light on how refugees and non-citizens can employ civic engagement to claim a place for themselves and overcome societal exclusion. About the author Sarah J. Grünendahl is research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and earned her doctorate in Political Science at the University of Siegen. Her research interests include migration and refugee studies, the effects of legal status on migrants' incorporation, and the nexus between societal participation, place (attachment) and identity. 001449353 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed September 9, 2022). 001449353 647_7 $$aAfghan War$$d(2001-2021)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01695175 001449353 647_7 $$aIraq War$$d(2003-2011)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01802311 001449353 647_7 $$aVietnam War$$d(1961-1975)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01431664 001449353 650_0 $$aAmericans$$zCanada$$xSocial conditions. 001449353 650_0 $$aVietnam War, 1961-1975$$xDraft resisters$$zUnited States. 001449353 650_0 $$aIraq War, 2003-2011$$xDraft resisters$$zUnited States. 001449353 650_0 $$aAfghan War, 2001-2021$$xDraft resisters$$zUnited States. 001449353 650_0 $$aWar and society. 001449353 651_0 $$aCanada$$xEmigration and immigration. 001449353 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xEmigration and immigration. 001449353 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001449353 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aGrünendahl, Sarah J..$$tU.S. war resisters' quest for refuge in Canada.$$dWiesbaden : Springer, 2022$$z9783658378394$$w(OCoLC)1328003569 001449353 830_0 $$aStudien zur Migrations- und Integrationspolitik.$$x2567-3157 001449353 852__ $$bebk 001449353 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-658-37840-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001449353 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1449353$$pGLOBAL_SET 001449353 980__ $$aBIB 001449353 980__ $$aEBOOK 001449353 982__ $$aEbook 001449353 983__ $$aOnline 001449353 994__ $$a92$$bISE
