The volume focuses on three case study regions: East African coast, North-West Africa, and the Iberian Peninsula. The regions are selected to provide a novel perspective on the socio-spatial impact of colonialism on the public life of urban settlements, driven by different political forces, in different geographical contexts and time periods. The three study areas are also linked by sharing several features of urban lifestyle such as the role of trade and the influence of religion, Islam in particular. The intertwined influence of socio-spatial urban characteristics on public life is presented on a range of case studies selected from Africa and southern Europe. The approaches are rooted in archaeological thinking on the built environment as material culture and incorporate critical interpretation of ethnographies and historical accounts on both the precolonial and colonial eras. This volume is of interest to archaeologists and researchers working in urban history, anthropology, and heritage. 001449804 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed October 4, 2022). 001449804 650_0 $$aUrbanization$$zAfrica$$xHistory. 001449804 650_0 $$aUrbanization$$zIberian Peninsula$$xHistory. 001449804 650_0 $$aPublic spaces$$zAfrica$$xHistory. 001449804 650_0 $$aPublic spaces$$zIberian Peninsula$$xHistory. 001449804 651_0 $$aAfrica$$xColonization. 001449804 651_0 $$aIberian Peninsula$$xColonization. 001449804 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001449804 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001449804 7001_ $$aPěchota, Jan,$$eauthor. 001449804 7001_ $$aKřížek, Daniel,$$eauthor. 001449804 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z3031146964$$z9783031146961$$w(OCoLC)1335113492 001449804 830_0 $$aContributions to global historical archaeology. 001449804 852__ $$bebk 001449804 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-14697-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001449804 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1449804$$pGLOBAL_SET 001449804 980__ $$aBIB 001449804 980__ $$aEBOOK 001449804 982__ $$aEbook 001449804 983__ $$aOnline 001449804 994__ $$a92$$bISE
