It analyses both the affirmation of the "author function", and, above all, its paradoxical opposite: the use of anonymity, a centuries-old practice present everywhere in Europe but often neglected by scholarship. The reasons why authors chose to publish their works anonymously were manifold, including prudence, fear of censorship, modesty, fear of personal criticism, or simple divertissement. In many cases, it was an ethical choice, especially for ecclesiastics. The Italian case provides a key perspective on the study of anonymity in the European context, contributing to the analysis of an overlooked topic in academic studies. Lodovica Braida is Professor of History of the Book at the University of Milan, Italy. Her work is devoted to the history of written culture and reading practices in early modern Europe, particularly in Italy, in a perspective of sociocultural history that dialogues with bibliography, literary criticism, and intellectual history. 001449826 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on October 24, 2022). 001449826 650_0 $$aItalian literature$$y18th century$$xHistory and criticism. 001449826 650_0 $$aAnonymous writings, Italian$$y18th century$$xHistory and criticism. 001449826 650_0 $$aPublishers and publishing$$zItaly$$xHistory$$y18th century. 001449826 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001449826 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001449826 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001449826 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aBraida, Lodovica.$$tAnonymity in eighteenth century Italian publishing.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2022$$z9783031038976$$w(OCoLC)1328012259 001449826 830_0 $$aNew directions in book history. 001449826 852__ $$bebk 001449826 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-03898-3$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001449826 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1449826$$pGLOBAL_SET 001449826 980__ $$aBIB 001449826 980__ $$aEBOOK 001449826 982__ $$aEbook 001449826 983__ $$aOnline 001449826 994__ $$a92$$bISE
