A perusal of the vast literary and iconographic repertory of Renaissance alchemy reveals that this late play is imbued with topoi, myths, and emblematic imagery coming from coeval alchemical, Paracelsian, and Hermetic sources. All the major symbols of alchemy are present in Shakespeares play: the intertwined serpents of the caduceus, the chemical wedding, the filius philosophorum, and the so-called rex chymicus. This book also provides an in-depth survey of late Renaissance alchemy, Paracelsian medicine, and Hermetic culture in the Elizabethan and Jacobean ages. Importantly, it contends that The Winters Tale, in symbolically retracing the healing pattern of the rota alchemica and in emphasising the Hermetic principles of unity and concord, glorifies King Jamess conciliatory attitude. 001450109 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed October 17, 2022). 001450109 60010 $$aShakespeare, William,$$d1564-1616.$$tWinter's tale. 001450109 650_0 $$aAlchemy in literature. 001450109 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001450109 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3031051661$$z9783031051661$$w(OCoLC)1309865512 001450109 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aZamparo, Martina.$$tAlchemy, Paracelsianism, and Shakespeare's The winter's tale.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2022$$z9783031051661$$w(OCoLC)1328008561 001450109 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in literature, science, and medicine.$$x2634-6443 001450109 852__ $$bebk 001450109 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-05167-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001450109 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1450109$$pGLOBAL_SET 001450109 980__ $$aBIB 001450109 980__ $$aEBOOK 001450109 982__ $$aEbook 001450109 983__ $$aOnline 001450109 994__ $$a92$$bISE
