Reading Marx through a realist lens enables us to make sense of the connections between (1) Marxs positive concept of freedom, rooted in a theory of human development, (2) his understanding of alienation as diagnosing capitalist unfreedom, and (3) his conceptions of democracy and socialism, respectively, as the cures for this unfreedom. Along the way, it discusses and responds to some of Marxs most insightful critics, such as Max Weber and Friedrich Hayek. This clarifies Marxs ideas for a new generation of political thinkers; explains the challenge they pose to contemporary debates about freedom, democracy, and future economic institutions; and demonstrates that these ideas remain both defensible and compelling. Paul Raekstad is an Assistant Professor of Political Theory at the University of Amsterdam working on radical political theory, in particular Marxism, anarchism, prefigurative politics, and direct action. They co-authored Prefigurative Politics: Building Tomorrow Today (2020). 001450657 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001450657 60010 $$aMarx, Karl,$$d1818-1883$$1https://isni.org/isni/0000000122796570 001450657 650_0 $$aSocialism. 001450657 650_0 $$aCapitalism. 001450657 650_0 $$aAlienation (Social psychology) 001450657 650_0 $$aLiberty. 001450657 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001450657 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aRaekstad, Paul.$$tKarl Marx's realist critique of capitalism.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2022$$z9783031063527$$w(OCoLC)1328026468 001450657 830_0 $$aMarx, Engels, and Marxisms. 001450657 852__ $$bebk 001450657 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-06353-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001450657 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1450657$$pGLOBAL_SET 001450657 980__ $$aBIB 001450657 980__ $$aEBOOK 001450657 982__ $$aEbook 001450657 983__ $$aOnline 001450657 994__ $$a92$$bISE
