It offers an introduction to the development of spy fiction both in England and in the United States and explores the ways in which issues such as the atomic bomb, double agents, paranoia, propaganda and megalomania manifest themselves within the genre. The book examines the ongoing marginalization of women within spy fiction texts, exploring the idea that this unique period in global history is responsible for the active promotion and celebration of masculinity and male superiority. From James Bond to Jason Bourne, the book evaluates the ongoing enforcement of patriarchal ideas and oppressions that, in the name of national security and patriotic duty, have contributed to the development of a genre in which discrimination and bias continue to dominate. Sian MacArthur is an independent academic and researcher with literary interests in Gothic and science fiction, and historical interests in the Cold War. She is the author of Crime and the Gothic: Identifying the Gothic Footprint in Modern Crime Fiction (2011) and Gothic Science Fiction: 1818 to the Present (Palgrave 2015), and Re-defining the Gothic with Mo Haydar in The Palgrave Handbook of Contemporary Gothic. 001450875 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001450875 650_0 $$aSpy stories, English$$xHistory and criticism. 001450875 650_0 $$aSpy stories, American$$xHistory and criticism. 001450875 650_0 $$aCold War in literature. 001450875 650_0 $$aSex in literature. 001450875 650_0 $$aSex discrimination in literature. 001450875 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411635 001450875 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001450875 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783031117879 001450875 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3031117867$$z9783031117862$$w(OCoLC)1331704897 001450875 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aMACARTHUR, SIAN.$$tGENDER ROLES AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS IN COLD WAR SPY FICTION.$$d[S.l.] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2022$$z3031117867$$w(OCoLC)1331704897 001450875 830_0 $$aCrime files series. 001450875 852__ $$bebk 001450875 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-11787-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001450875 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1450875$$pGLOBAL_SET 001450875 980__ $$aBIB 001450875 980__ $$aEBOOK 001450875 982__ $$aEbook 001450875 983__ $$aOnline 001450875 994__ $$a92$$bISE
