Across interviews, policy mechanisms and classroom observations, the author shows how raciolinguistic ideologies are rooted in British colonial logics which continue to shape contemporary education policy. He shows how these policies require marginalised speakers to modify their speech patterns in line with normative standards of whiteness under new guises of social justice and research robustness. Finally, new visions for language education and linguistic justice are offered, demonstrating how teachers can see themselves as language activists to identify, resist and reject faults in a hostile and oppressive policy architecture. This book draws on fields including critical language policy, educational sociolinguistics, genealogy, raciolinguistics and critical language awareness. Ian Cushing is Senior Lecturer in English and Education at Edge Hill University, UK. His work examines the ways in which language ideologies get transformed into policies and pedagogies, and how these work against marginalised groups. His work has appeared in journals such as Language in Society, Language Policy, British Educational Research Journal and Critical Inquiry in Language Studies. 001451214 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001451214 650_0 $$aLinguistic minorities$$zEngland. 001451214 650_0 $$aRacism in education$$zEngland. 001451214 650_0 $$aLanguage policy$$zEngland. 001451214 650_0 $$aEnglish language$$xStudy and teaching. 001451214 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001451214 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aCushing, Ian.$$tStandards, stigma, surveillance.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2022$$z9783031178900$$w(OCoLC)1346944150 001451214 852__ $$bebk 001451214 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-17891-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001451214 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1451214$$pGLOBAL_SET 001451214 980__ $$aBIB 001451214 980__ $$aEBOOK 001451214 982__ $$aEbook 001451214 983__ $$aOnline 001451214 994__ $$a92$$bISE
