Reflection on personal identity is often thought to have begun in earnest with John Lockes famous consciousness-based account, published in the 2nd Edition of the Essay in 1694. The present work argues that we ought to understand modern notions of personal identity, including Lockes own, as emerging from within debates about the metaphysics of resurrection across the seventeenth century. It recovers and analyses theories of personal identity and resurrection in Locke and Leibniz, as well as largely-forgotten theories from the Cambridge Platonists, Thomas Jackson, and Francisco Suarez. The book narrates a time of radical change in conceptions of personal identity: the period begins with a near-consensus on hylomorphism, according to which the body is an essential metaphysical part of the person. The re-emergence of platonism in the period then undermines the centrality of the body for personal identity, and this lays the groundwork for a more thoroughly psychological account of personal identity in Locke. This work represents the first scholarly study to thoroughly situate early modern conceptions of personal identity, embodiment, and the afterlife within the context of late scholasticism. Finally, due to its focus on the arguments of the authors in question, the work will be of interest to philosophers of religion as well as historians of philosophy. 001451384 650_0 $$aPhilosophy$$xHistory. 001451384 650_0 $$aReligion$$xPhilosophy. 001451384 650_0 $$aResurrection. 001451384 650_0 $$aMetaphysics$$vEarly works to 1800. 001451384 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001451384 655_7 $$aEarly works.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411636 001451384 655_7 $$aHistory.$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst01411628 001451384 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aThompson, Jon W.$$tThe Metaphysics of Resurrection in Seventeenth-Century Philosophy$$dCham : Springer International Publishing AG,c2022$$z9783031101670 001451384 830_0 $$aArchives internationales d'histoire des idées ;$$v241. 001451384 852__ $$bebk 001451384 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-10168-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001451384 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1451384$$pGLOBAL_SET 001451384 980__ $$aBIB 001451384 980__ $$aEBOOK 001451384 982__ $$aEbook 001451384 983__ $$aOnline 001451384 994__ $$a92$$bISE
