Utopian studies is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary, and this research integrates literary hermeneutics with ideas and methods from political science and the history of ideas. In doing so, it argues that Hungarian utopianism was influenced by the regions (and Hungarian cultures) position of permanent liminality between Western and Eastern European patterns of power structures, social and political order. After a thorough methodological introduction, some early modern texts written in Hungary are discussed, while the detailed analyses focus on nineteenth-century texts, written by Bessenyei, Madach, and Jokai, whereas the twentieth century is represented by Karinthy, Babits and Szathmari. In the interpretations the results of contemporary scholarship is applied, particularly the works of Lyman Tower Sargent, Gregory Claeys and Fatima Vieira. Zsolt Cziganyik is Associate Professor at Eotvos Lorand University, Hungary. He has been a visiting professor at Central European University, and a scholar at the Gerda Henkel Foundation. His research focuses on the interaction of politics and literature in modern and contemporary prose, especially in utopian and dystopian literature. 001452263 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on January 30, 2023). 001452263 650_0 $$aHungarian fiction$$y19th century$$xHistory and criticism. 001452263 650_0 $$aHungarian fiction$$y20th century$$xHistory and criticism. 001452263 650_0 $$aUtopias in literature. 001452263 650_0 $$aDystopias in literature. 001452263 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001452263 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aCZIGNYIK, ZSOLT.$$tUTOPIA BETWEEN EAST AND WEST IN HUNGARIAN LITERATURE.$$d[Place of publication not identified] : PALGRAVE MACMILLAN, 2022$$z3031092252$$w(OCoLC)1319198497 001452263 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in utopianism. 001452263 852__ $$bebk 001452263 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-09226-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001452263 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1452263$$pGLOBAL_SET 001452263 980__ $$aBIB 001452263 980__ $$aEBOOK 001452263 982__ $$aEbook 001452263 983__ $$aOnline 001452263 994__ $$a92$$bISE
