It argues the case that, far from the illusion during the Maoist period that a new society had been established where the working classes held greater political and economic autonomy, economic reforms in the post-Mao era have led to the return of traditional Marxist proletariats in China. The book demonstrates how the reforms of Deng Xiaoping have led to increased economic efficiency at the expense of economic equality through an extensive case study of an SOE (state-owned enterprise) in Sichuan Province as well as wider discussions of the emergence of state capitalism on both a micro and macroeconomic level. The book also discusses workers' protests during these periods of economic reform to reflect the reformation of class consciousness in post-Mao China, drawing on Marx's concept of a transition from a 'class-in-itself' to a 'class-for-itself'. Shan Huang is a Fellow at the United Nations Development Programme in New York and a PhD candidate at King's College London, focusing on the political economy of China and Chinese economic and social history. 001454201 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001454201 60010 $$aDeng, Xiaoping,$$d1904-1997$$1https://isni.org/isni/0000000114562686 001454201 650_0 $$aWorking class$$zChina$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001454201 650_0 $$aWorking class$$zChina$$xHistory$$y21st century. 001454201 651_0 $$aChina$$xEconomic policy$$y1976-2000. 001454201 651_0 $$aChina$$xEconomic policy$$y2000- 001454201 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001454201 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHuang, Shan Shanne, author.$$tPolitical economy of reforms and the remaking of the proletarian class in China, 1980s-2010s$$z9783031204548$$w(OCoLC)1363815629 001454201 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in economic history,$$x2662-6500 001454201 852__ $$bebk 001454201 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-20455-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001454201 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1454201$$pGLOBAL_SET 001454201 980__ $$aBIB 001454201 980__ $$aEBOOK 001454201 982__ $$aEbook 001454201 983__ $$aOnline 001454201 994__ $$a92$$bISE
