This book looks at three historical examples of temporarily unrestricted migration into the United States, France, and Ireland: the arrival of Mariel Cubans in Miami (Florida) in 1980, the flight of Pied Noir and Harki refugees from Algeria to Marseille in 1962, and the migration of Poles and other new European Union 'Accession 8' citizens into Dublin in 2004. Based on personal interviews, archival research, and statistical analysis, the study finds that the effects of these population movements on the economics, politics, and social life of these cities were much less catastrophic than opponents of free immigration claim. Detailed chapters cover schools, crime, ethnic politics, unemployment and wages, public finances, housing, and racial violence"--$$cProvided by publisher. 001457985 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001457985 650_0 $$aEmigration and immigration$$xGovernment policy. 001457985 650_0 $$aEmigration and immigration$$xEconomic aspects. 001457985 650_0 $$aEmigration and immigration$$xSocial aspects. 001457985 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xEmigration and immigration$$xGovernment policy. 001457985 651_0 $$aFrance$$xEmigration and immigration$$xGovernment policy. 001457985 651_0 $$aIreland$$xEmigration and immigration$$xGovernment policy. 001457985 655_0 $$aElectronic books 001457985 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aFetzer, Joel S.$$tOpen borders and international migration policy : the effects of unrestricted immigration in the United States, France, and Ireland.$$dHoundmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire : Palgrave Macmillan, 2016$$z9781137513915$$w(DLC)18816422 001457985 830_0 $$aPalgrave pivot. 001457985 852__ $$bebk 001457985 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete $$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=4082423$$zOnline Access 001457985 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1457985$$pGLOBAL_SET 001457985 980__ $$aBIB 001457985 980__ $$aEBOOK 001457985 982__ $$aEbook 001457985 983__ $$aOnline
