Cultural nationalism is a widely debated but poorly understood process. Contrary to prevailing perceptions, the Cold War may have given way to a more progressive open society, but the politicization of ethnicity hardened a more deeply entrenched cultural frame of mind. Instead of liberating an indigenous reality, Taiwanese consciousness has ironically polarized the political dead ends of reunification and independence. In the final analysis, the ethnography can serve as a paradigmatic case study for critical cultural studies. There are clear ramifications also for a comparative study of the cultural politics of other Chinese speaking or Asian societies and their histories. Allen Chun is Chair Professor in the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Program, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. His interests involve cultural theory, nation-state formation, globalization and identity. His research focuses on Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. His recent books include Forget Chineseness: On the Geopolitics of Cultural Identification (2017) and On the Geopragmatics of Anthropological Identification (2019). 001468211 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed May 26, 2023). 001468211 650_0 $$aNationalism$$zTaiwan. 001468211 650_0 $$aNational characteristics, Taiwan$$xPolitical aspects. 001468211 650_0 $$aEducation$$zTaiwan. 001468211 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001468211 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aChun, Allen$$tFrom Social Visibility to Political Invisibility$$dSingapore : Palgrave Macmillan,c2023$$z9789819920174 001468211 852__ $$bebk 001468211 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-981-99-2018-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001468211 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1468211$$pGLOBAL_SET 001468211 980__ $$aBIB 001468211 980__ $$aEBOOK 001468211 982__ $$aEbook 001468211 983__ $$aOnline 001468211 994__ $$a92$$bISE
