It relies on remote sensing data and qualitative historical research to explore how armed conflict between non-state actors generated the regions largest epidemic of P. vivax malaria since the 1960s. This book is an important addition to the literature on the Karabakh conflict and conflict studies more broadly because the infectious disease outbreaks associated with warfare often kill more people than the armed conflicts themselves. Warfare itself has also changed dramatically since the collapse of the USSR, and the Karabakh conflict provides an excellent case study of the way New Wars transform the natural and social environment to facilitate outbreaks of preventable disease. This extended case study will be useful to researchers from a variety of academic disciplines, including medical anthropology, geography, conflict studies, disease ecology, global health and public health. It also reveals the fragility of twentieth century malaria control in temperate regions and will assist in predictive modeling for future outbreaks. 001469414 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001469414 647_7 $$aNagorno-Karabakh War$$d(2020)$$2fast$$0(OCoLC)fst02060270 001469414 650_0 $$aEthnic conflict$$zCaucasus, South. 001469414 650_0 $$aNagorno-Karabakh War, 2020. 001469414 650_0 $$aMalaria$$zCaucasus, South. 001469414 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001469414 7001_ $$aBeurs, Kirsten de,$$eauthor. 001469414 7001_ $$aBrayfield, Brad,$$eauthor. 001469414 7001_ $$aMelkonyan, Ani,$$eauthor.$$1https://isni.org/isni/0000000500407318 001469414 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHirschfeld, Katherine.$$tNew wars and old plagues.$$dBasingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan, 2023$$z9783031311420$$w(OCoLC)1381120389 001469414 852__ $$bebk 001469414 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-31143-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.2 001469414 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1469414$$pGLOBAL_SET 001469414 980__ $$aBIB 001469414 980__ $$aEBOOK 001469414 982__ $$aEbook 001469414 983__ $$aOnline 001469414 994__ $$a92$$bISE
