It argues that trade policies like Japans Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) have important consequences for national language (education) policies and for discourses about language and nation. Since 2008, Japan has signed the EPAs with Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam to recruit migrant nurses and eldercare workers and manage their mobility by means of pre-employment language training and the Japanese-medium licensure examinations. Through the analysis of these language management devices, this book demonstrates that the EPAs are a manifestation and representation of contemporary language issues intertwined particularly with pressing issues of Japans social aging and demographic change. As the EPAs are intertwined with welfare, economy, social cohesion, and international political and economic relations and competitiveness, the book presents a far more complex picture of and a richer potential of language policy. 001469952 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed June 28, 2023). 001469952 650_0 $$aLanguage policy$$zJapan 001469952 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001469952 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aOtomo, Ruriko$$tLinking Language, Trade and Migration$$dCham : Springer International Publishing AG,c2023$$z9783031332333 001469952 830_0 $$aLanguage policy (Monographic series) ;$$vv. 33. 001469952 852__ $$bebk 001469952 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-33234-0$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001469952 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1469952$$pGLOBAL_SET 001469952 980__ $$aBIB 001469952 980__ $$aEBOOK 001469952 982__ $$aEbook 001469952 983__ $$aOnline 001469952 994__ $$a92$$bISE
