Its main premise is that elements from the classical and modern tragic tradition persist and permeate many of the cultural works created in Spain, especially the films on which the book centers this study. The inscrutability and indolence of the gods, the mutability of fortune, the recurrent narratives of fall and redemption, the unavoidable clash between ethical forces, the tension between free will and fate, the violent resolution of both internal and external conflicts, and the overwhelming feelings of guilt that haunt the tragic heroine/hero are consistent aspects that traverse Spanish cinema as a response to universal queries about human suffering and death. Luis M. Gonzlez is Professor in the Hispanic Studies Department at Connecticut College, where he teaches Spanish Film, Literature and Culture. His publications on Spanish theater and film include the following books: La escena madrilea durante la II Repblica (19311939), El teatro espaol durante la II Repblica y la crtica de su tiempo (19311936), and Fascismo, kitsch y cine histrico en Espaa (19391953). He also co-authored a translation of Valle Inclans Comedias Brbaras into English, and he is the editor of Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escnicos. 001470160 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 001470160 650_0 $$aMotion pictures$$zSpain$$xHistory$$y20th century. 001470160 650_0 $$aMotion pictures$$zSpain$$xHistory$$y21st century. 001470160 650_0 $$aTragedy in motion pictures. 001470160 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001470160 77608 $$iebook version :$$z9783031193255 001470160 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z3031193245$$z9783031193248$$w(OCoLC)1346070509 001470160 852__ $$bebk 001470160 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-19325-5$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001470160 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1470160$$pGLOBAL_SET 001470160 980__ $$aBIB 001470160 980__ $$aEBOOK 001470160 982__ $$aEbook 001470160 983__ $$aOnline 001470160 994__ $$a92$$bISE
