Addressing the need for textbook research to broaden its focus from GDR history to GDR literature, the author presents case studies of well-known GDR authors (Bertolt Brecht, Johannes R. Becher, Anna Seghers, Wolf Biermann, and Christa Wolf), each examining a particular aspect of the societal discourse about GDR literature and the tension between (literary) text and (historical) context. Taken together, the case studies reveal the frequently underestimated power of ideology in literature textbooks. They also show how attempts to package these authors into simplified categories ultimately reveal the profound complexities of the GDR literary legacy. By examining the clear tension between literature and politics in textbooks and curricula, the author demonstrates how ideological messages are transmitted in all textbooks, as well as the importance of attending to overt and covert ideology. 001481000 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed September 21, 2023). 001481000 650_6 $$aLittérature allemande$$xÉtude et enseignement$$zAllemagne (Est) 001481000 650_0 $$aGerman literature$$xStudy and teaching$$zGermany (East)$$0(DLC)sh 85054389 001481000 650_0 $$aGerman literature$$zGermany (East)$$xHistory and criticism.$$0(DLC)sh 85054389 001481000 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001481000 77608 $$iPrint version: $$z3031390504$$z9783031390500$$w(OCoLC)1385400971 001481000 830_0 $$aPalgrave studies in educational media,$$x2662-737X 001481000 852__ $$bebk 001481000 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-39051-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001481000 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1481000$$pGLOBAL_SET 001481000 980__ $$aBIB 001481000 980__ $$aEBOOK 001481000 982__ $$aEbook 001481000 983__ $$aOnline 001481000 994__ $$a92$$bISE
