Focusing specifically on cartoons from the period, the book utilises the author's innovative PEARL methodology to analyse the impact of Publishers' attitudes, Editorial techniques, Artistic methods, Readers' responses, and Legal context on historical images published in this period. The book outlines a financial and visual context for the period, discussing the importance of political cartoons during a period when the relationship between the state and the taxpayer was fundamentally shifting. There was a gradual increase in trust between government and the taxpayer over the raising and use of public monies through taxation. This included attempts to reduce the size of the national debt, whilst having to finance the ever-increasing economic impact of wars and are considered alongside an exploration of the recurring iconographical styles of the period. The book situates the visual history of taxation within a wider context of political images responding to fiscal events and uses the PEARL analysis technique to pinpoint nuanced and evolving public attitudes towards tax structures in Britain, as well as comparative developments in the US such as the impact of the Civil War and income tax debates. The book will be of interest to financial historians and academic cultural historians, as well as all those interested in visual culture and political imagery. Henry Sless is currently a Research Associate at the Henley Business School at the University of Reading, UK. He received a Master's in historical cartoons from the University of Kent, UK, and a doctorate in visual images of finance in the Victorian era from the University of Reading. 001482604 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed October 24, 2023). 001482604 650_6 $$aCaricature politique$$xHistoire$$y19e siècle. 001482604 650_6 $$aÉconomie politique$$xDans l'art. 001482604 650_0 $$aTaxation$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y19th century$$xCaricatures and cartoons. 001482604 650_0 $$aPolitical satire, English$$xHistory and criticism. 001482604 650_0 $$aPolitical cartoons$$xHistory$$y19th century. 001482604 650_0 $$aEconomics$$xIn art.$$xEconomic conditions$$0(DLC)sh 85001945 001482604 651_0 $$aGreat Britain$$xPolitics and government$$y19th century$$xCaricatures and cartoons. 001482604 655_7 $$aArt$$2fast 001482604 655_7 $$aCaricatures and cartoons$$2fast 001482604 655_7 $$aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$$2fast 001482604 655_7 $$aHistory$$2fast 001482604 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 001482604 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783031392184 001482604 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3031392175$$z9783031392177$$w(OCoLC)1385449889 001482604 852__ $$bebk 001482604 85640 $$3Springer Nature$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-031-39218-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 001482604 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1482604$$pGLOBAL_SET 001482604 980__ $$aBIB 001482604 980__ $$aEBOOK 001482604 982__ $$aEbook 001482604 983__ $$aOnline 001482604 994__ $$a92$$bISE
